The project is part of the State Water Protection Programme (measure ID 9294, 9675 and 9296). The Mühlgraben Gispersleben is a waterbody of the second order in the northern urban area of Erfurt. Over a length of approx. 1.7 km, the Mühlgraben runs parallel to the Gera, whereby it is diverted to the left of the Gera at the level of "Straße der Nationen" and flows back into the first-order waterbody at the level of "Am Kilianpark". From the west, the tributaries of the Marbach, the Borntalgraben/Rosenborn and the Lindnergrund, as well as two DN 300 drainages reach the Mühlgraben.

The water body renaturation objectives are the integration of the waterbody as a local recreation area, the implementation of structure-improving measures, the conservation of already existing valuable biotope structures, and the establishment of continuity to achieve good ecological status for the Mühlgraben. In this context, the demolition of the BW 58 bridge construction and the building alteration of the BW 59 bridge were also integrated into this project.
