Project: The Erfurt tramway is the backbone of the public local transport system in the Thuringian state capital Erfurt. In terms of its volume, the Erfurter Verkehrsbetriebe is one of the medium-sized tramway operations in Germany. In 2016, it had around 105,000 passengers per day. And the trend is rising. In 2018, around 53.7 million people travelled by public transport in Erfurt, the highest result in years. The new trams are scheduled to roll through the state capital from the end of 2020. The order has already been placed, the design already presented. "A growing city needs growing public transport. Fourteen new low-floor trams will expand the EVAG's public transport services. This will improve the people's mobility in Erfurt significantly. The procurement of modern, energy-efficient trams can also make an important contribution to the expansion of e-mobility and, thus, to the energy transition and the reduction of CO2 emissions" (Thuringia's Transport Minister Birgit Keller)

The "Environmentally-Oriented Transport Management Erfurt (UVE)" is intended to make a crucial contribution to the reduction of traffic-related emissions and thus of the total immission load of carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx, NO2) and particulate matter (PM10) in order to improve the air quality for humans and vegetation. The increased, systematic employment of integrated transport and environmental management will play an essential role in reducing transport-related emissions.
The project thus ultimately also serves to improve the health of the people in the city. The intention is to create the organisational and technical prerequisites for dynamic traffic control under environmental aspects. In addition to the necessary compliance with limit values, which can usually only be checked locally, the focus is on a complex city-wide consideration. Based on the experiences acquired in two pilot measures, the conditions for implementing an environmentally-orientated transport management system in the entire city of Erfurt were established.

The following speaks for the SWE EVAG & UVE : The project has a practical benefit for Erfurt residents and visitors. The tramway has a long tradition. Local public transport will be notably strengthened. The project is incorporated into the Thuringia Electromobility Master Plan 2030. The UVE project has a model character and can serve as an example for other cities.
